What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a non-operative procedure used to treat blood vessel malformations and spider veins. This is one method along with surgery, radiofrequency and ablation used for treatment of spider and varicose veins. The procedure has been used since the 1930’s and only takes between 15 and 30 minutes to perform.

The procedure is performed using micro-injections of a solution, Sotradecol, through small needles directly into the veins. The solution irritates the lining of the blood vessel causing it to swell and stick together and the blood to clot. Over time the vessel turns into scar tissue and fades away.

Spider veins can be treated through laser treatment; however, unlike the laser, the sclerosing solution closes the “feeder veins” under the skin that are causing the veins to form. This reduces the possibility for reoccurrence.

Patients need to wear compression stockings for about two weeks after treatment. The procedure usually takes 4-6 treatments, 6 weeks apart, to complete effective slcerotherapy.
