Summer Skin Care Tips

Protecting and caring for skin is important, especially during the summer months as the sun’s rays beat down upon us. The following health and safety tips are important to keep in mind throughout the season:

  • One of the most important steps to take while outdoors is applying proper sunscreen. This helps block blocks the sun’s powerful rays and reduces the risk of sunburn and even skin cancer.

  • Use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 or more which has UVA and UVB protection and remember to continuously reapply throughout the day.

  • According to new research, adults who apply sunscreen daily drastically reduce their risk of contracting melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.

  • Light reflecting clothing can also be worn to reduce contact with the sun’s rays and sunburn. Wearing white and other light-colored clothing is beneficial while spending time outdoors.

  • If your skin starts to burn or ache, always head indoors or seek shade.

  • While sunburns may feel temporary, they can have long-lasting, damaging effects on the skin. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, children are especially at risk. One sunburn during childhood more than doubles a person’s chances of developing melanoma later in life.
