Cleaning Makeup Brushes to Keep Your Skin Clear

Ladies, many of us wear makeup.  Some of us use our hands to apply it (which should always be clean to prevent the spread of bacteria to your face from your hands), while others rely on makeup brushes or sponges. One of the most important things to prevent blemished skin that is often overlooked, is regularly cleaning your makeup brushes. Leaving old makeup on them and then reusing them without cleaning creates a breeding ground for bacteria. It also can transfer bacteria back into your makeup.

 

 

Washing your makeup brushes should be a regular part of your beauty routine. You wash your face, your body and your clothing; you should most definitely be adding washing your makeup brushes and sponges into the mix. Luckily, cleaning your makeup brushes is quick and easy. The first step is picking up a brush cleaner and spritzing after each use, you can find products at Sephora and Target for this. Once a week you should give your brushes a nice deep clean (note that brushes will need a few hours to dry after deep cleaning, so it’s best to clean them after you’ve applied makeup for the day).

 

Here is what you’ll need to properly clean your brushes and sponges:

 

  • A shallow bowl
  • Gentle clarifying shampoo or baby shampoo
  • Your sink
  • A lint free cloth

 

Instructions:

 

  1. Begin by running your brushes under lukewarm water, rinsing out the residual makeup. Try to focus o the actual bristles while avoiding the part of the brush where the bristles are glued in, excess exposure to water over time can cause the bristles to loosen
  2. Fill a bowl with lukewarm water and quirt a tiny amount of shampoo into it. Gentle swirl your brush tip in the water, you can also swirl the brush tip in the palm of your (clean) hand and work up a lather
  3. Rinse the brush tip under running water once again. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until the water runs clear from the brush
  4. Use a cloth to wipe your brush clean, reshaping the bristles as you go
  5. Lay your brushes flat on a cloth to dry

 

And there you have it! A cleaner brush, means a cleaner face! And BONUS! Cleaning your brushes also helps your make-up brushes last longer too!
